We offer in-language resources and tools to help Chinese Americans to combat misinformation and disinformation effectively, such as real-time alerts, reports, and in-depth fact-checking articles. Readers can also report and suggest misinformation and disinformation for fact-checking.
Piyaoba.org is managed by the Chinese Digital Engagement Team from Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA), a non-profit organization based in California. Our team is led by Chinese journalists and media experts. We also work with many independent Chinese writers, fact-checkers, and data scientists.
CAA established its Chinese Digital Engagement Team for the purpose of providing accurate information to the Chinese American community about issues related to social justice. In particular, we’ve created channels on Chinese-language social media (e.g. WeChat. Piyaoba is a San Francisco–based nonprofit, nonpartisan fact-checking organization. We are dedicated to fact-checking rumors and misinformation circulating within Chinese-speaking communities in the United States, with a particular focus on critical issues including immigrant rights, economic justice, education, health and public well-being, community safety, racial and social justice, and civic engagement.
Our mission is to verify facts that are critical to the well-being and development of Chinese American communities. We do not and cannot fact-check opinions. Regardless of whether the political orientation associated with a piece of information or viewpoint is from the left or the right, we apply the same standards in evaluating the accuracy of factual claims. We are committed to the principles of rigor, objectivity, accuracy, and transparency to ensure the credibility of our fact-checking work.
In addition, Piyaoba works closely with other fact-checking organizations serving communities where English is not the primary language to research and address the lack of access to accurate information in immigrant communities. Through resource sharing, technical collaboration, and joint initiatives, we explore effective approaches to addressing the challenges of misinformation across different languages and cultural contexts.

Corrections
Piyaoba is committed to accuracy, transparency, and accountability in its fact-checking work. If we identify a factual error, significant omission, or other error that affects the accuracy of a published article, we will promptly review and correct it.
Substantive corrections will be clearly identified on the original article, including the date of the correction and, when appropriate, an explanation of what was changed and why. We will not silently remove significant errors without disclosure.
Readers may report potential factual errors or request a correction by contacting contact@piyaoba.org. Our editorial team will independently review correction requests and determine whether a correction is warranted based on the available evidence. A correction request does not automatically result in a change to an article.
We may also update previously published fact-checks when new, credible information becomes available and will identify significant updates when appropriate.

Fact-checking Methodology /
Our Fact-Checking Process and Standards
The detailed fact-checking process and standards used by Piyaoba are as follows:
Step 1: Monitoring, Collecting, and Recording Information
The first step in our fact-checking process is to effectively monitor and document rumors and suspected misinformation circulating within Chinese-language communities on social media platforms. To ensure that our fact-checking work is systematic and consistent, we maintain the Piyaoba Misinformation Database. This database supports our day-to-day fact-checking work while also helping us identify trends and developments in the spread of misinformation within the community.
How We Build and Maintain the Database:
1. Manual Review:
The initial development of the Piyaoba Misinformation Database relied on manually organizing data from previous fact-checking efforts involving Chinese-language misinformation. Based on hundreds of previously fact-checked cases, we identified frequently occurring misinformation-related keywords and accounts that have been involved in spreading misinformation.
2. Use of Automated Tools:
The database is updated and maintained through a combination of human screening and judgment and automated social media data collection tools. These tools primarily include Junkipedia, a technology platform that provides automated collection of information associated with specific social media accounts and keywords and aggregates misinformation data.
We also use a technology platform jointly developed by Piyaoba and San Francisco-based technology company Meedan. Building on Junkipedia, this platform incorporates misinformation trend analysis and automated classification capabilities and generates real-time reports.
Step 2: Determining Priorities
After identifying potential misinformation, we assess which content should be prioritized for fact-checking based on three core criteria:
Issue Relevance
- Does the content concern issues that are among our areas of focus, such as immigrant rights, the economy, education, health and public well-being, and community safety?
- Content that receives high levels of engagement but is unrelated to the interests or well-being of the community—such as celebrity gossip or sensational stories—is generally not prioritized for fact-checking.
Reach and Potential Impact
- Individual posts with more than approximately 5,000 to 10,000 views may be prioritized. Content with more than 1,000 views is eligible to be included in our database, with engagement levels weighted according to the characteristics of different platforms. We also consider whether the claim has spread across multiple platforms, such as Chinese-language Twitter/X, WeChat, Telegram groups, and Xiaohongshu.
- We consider whether the rumor has generated widespread discussion within the community or has already caused, or has the potential to cause, significant negative social impact.
Verifiability
- We fact-check objective factual claims, not subjective opinions, which cannot be fact-checked in the same manner.
- We consider whether an issue falls outside our ability to verify or cannot reasonably be fact-checked, such as certain unfalsifiable conspiracy theories. We follow the principle of “the burden of proof lies with the person making the claim.” When a conspiracy theory cannot be substantiated, it may likewise be impossible to definitively disprove. We therefore expect the person making or spreading the claim to provide supporting evidence rather than requiring fact-checkers to prove that the claim is false. This approach helps avoid placing unnecessary burdens on fact-checkers and applying unfair double standards.
- We also consider whether the claim has already been repeatedly fact-checked or comprehensively addressed by authoritative English-language media outlets.
Step 3: Verification and Fact-Checking
Our fact-checkers consistently adhere to the principles of rigor, objectivity, accuracy, and transparency to ensure that our verification process is professional and credible. Our fact-checking focuses on the reliability of information sources, the soundness of the underlying reasoning, the accuracy and objectivity of data and factual claims, and the transparency of the verification process as a whole.
Tracing Data and Sources:
We verify relevant facts and data individually and trace information back to its original sources to ensure the accuracy and reliability of our findings. We present our research methodology and verification process as transparently as possible, with the goal of helping readers develop their own fact-checking skills and evaluate information independently.
Expert Consultation:
When necessary, we consult scholars and experts in relevant fields or contact individuals directly involved in an event to ensure the accuracy of our findings and the credibility and authority of our conclusions.
Multi-Perspective Analysis:
We compare information from multiple sources and perspectives to reduce the potential bias that can result from relying on a single source or viewpoint.
Distinguishing Opinions from Facts:
We apply the same standards when evaluating misinformation associated with both the political left and right. When misinformation combines opinions with partially inaccurate or misleading factual claims, we provide evidence and clearly identify the factual elements that are incorrect, helping community members distinguish between facts and opinions.
Final Step: Conclusions and Publication
We present our fact-checking findings in a clear and accessible manner, supplemented by relevant background information and sources to help community members understand and share accurate information.
Piyaoba’s fact-checking content is organized into two primary categories: “Rumor Alert” and “In-Depth Fact-Check.”
Rumor Alert directly classifies a claim as “True,” “False,” or “Partly True.”
In-Depth Fact-Check goes beyond the basic verification of a claim by providing more extensive background information, context, and analysis.
